How To Focus And Avoid Distractions

August 5th, 2009

The Passage of Time

Building an internet business is difficult enough without having to deal with all of the distractions you will face on your quest for success.  Over time, I have learned that I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to procrastination, and time and again, the people I mentor and work with experience similar challenges.  Once you realize you are sabotaging your own success however, you will certainly see positive results.

So what are some things that can distract us?  Well, they come from both offline and online sources.  The biggest  offline distraction most people I speak to have is the television.  Now avoiding this is really as simple as just turning it off.  If your success is important enough to you, this is not much to ask.  For those truly addicted, at very minimum you must schedule certain time periods daily that will solely be dedicated to building your internet business, and at those times, there can be absolutely no distractions allowed, tv included.  Another offline distraction is your cell phone.  Non-business calls, texting and checking your emails every minute with your blackberries and iphones  aren’t going to build an internet business.

Now having set aside a specific time daily for your business, you must realize that simply being on the computer does not mean that you are doing business building activities.  As I’m sure you know, most distraction come online.  It is really easy to avoid these obstacles once you realize they are happening.  Checking emails constantly will not help you build your business.  Yes, you need to respond to those asking questions of you, but for the most part, if something is urgent, a prospective customer will call you.  You can check your email twice daily and be fine.  Constantly checking your stats isn’t productive either.  While it is imperative to see your stats, like if you are making sales, or where traffic is coming is necessary, doing this more than once on any given day can be counter productive.  Online chat conversations that aren’t business related should also be avoided during this block of time.  Between skype, yahoo, facebook, twitter and the rest, your time can easily be wasted while your competitors continue to catch up, or worse yet, beat you in your efforts.

Now don’t get me wrong, if set up correctly, social media can prove to be quite a profitable activity, but you have to determine whether or not your customers are coming from this source.  How do you do this?  Simple.  Take a log of your daily business building activities and track them.  After a few weeks you should see where your largest amount of leads and paying customers are coming from.  Is it from videos?  Articles?  Press releases?  Your blog?  Social media?  Offline advertising?  Reverse marketing?  Tracking your activities and results over a short time period will not only tell you what is working, but will tell you where you should be focusing your time online.  Start eliminating distractions and increasing productive business building activities, and your internet business will flourish.

Do I Need To Use An Autoresponder?

June 25th, 2009

The other day someone on my list called me up with some questions. Over the duration of that conversation, we covered many things, but the most important breakthrough that day was the introduction of an autoresponder to him. You see, he had mentioned that about a decade ago, he had actually built an mlm business that was earning him in the area of $40K a month. Unfortunately for him, the company somehow fell apart, and his earnings were gone.

Now some of you may think this was the worst of the scenario, and of course taking a $40K a month hit is bad. But what’s actually even more of an issue is that he really had no records of his list. See, it’s hard to imagine, but only ten years ago, many things were still being done manually, and of course even if he had the records of his whole list written down, it would be quite difficult to maintain communications with all of them just by using the phone.

This is when I presented the autoresponder to him. I had him imagine if he had maintained contact with all those people, even over a ten year period, just by sending them some quick messages on what he was up to, wishing them happy holidays, giving them tips, whatever. He would then be able to start any other business, and with the click of a send button, he could possibly sponsor enough people in a company today to rival the income of what he was making then. Pretty powerful stuff, huh?

The first thing I ask people when they come to me for help is if they are building a list. If you are not building a list, you are wasting your time. This is especially true in today’s age where people really need to see a message multiple times before making a purchase.

With an autoresponder you can:

  • Maintain contact with your list as long as they remain subscribed
  • Build a relationship with your list through helpful and friendly messages
  • Present offers to your list that will earn you money so long as you have built trust and a positive relationship with them

With that said, you now know that setting up an autoresponder is your first step to success in your internet business.  There are many email autoresponders out there, but in my opinion, Aweber offers the best autoresponder service. Whichever you choose, make sure you get started and begin building long lasting profitable relationships today.

Social Networking for Your Internet Business

February 28th, 2009

People come up with ideas all the time. Some of these ideas that are so original and come at the right time and place that their success leads to a phenomenon. Such is the case with social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Social networking sites are a relatively simple idea but sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. This is evidenced by the tens of millions of dollars that have been earned by some of the social networking sites. Of course, you do not need to own a social networking site in order to reap financial gain from them. You could simply be a participant who uses these sites as a low cost method of advertising.

While the original intent of these sites was to form online communities of friends of like minded interests many have also expanded this concept to include communities of business relationships. For example, a MySpace page for a surf shop can develop a network of friends who are interested in purchasing surf gear and fashion. This provides an online retailer with a targeted market of consumers who the seller can easily access and promote to…with little to no cost. Clearly, this has proven to be a cash cow for a number of smart businesses.

Of course, the operative word here is smart and not everyone has played the game intelligently. Those who have used social networking sites as a base of operations for spamming members usually find themselves thrown out of the community. Such people not only harm themselves but also make it difficult for others as such actions lead to anti-marketing policies on social networking sites. It goes without saying that such behavior should be avoided by anyone who is serious about using social networking sites as viable marketing tools.

As such, if you are looking to expand your internet business, exploring the options available through social networking sites is a wise idea. They are truly invaluable.
